A Night at the Theatre

Some of you may wonder, when I say I have rehearsal, just exactly what that might entail. Well, it entails a lot. Work, time, and focus. You must stay focused for long periods of waiting, ready for the precise moment when you are going on or helping someone else. It is fun, difficult at times, and very rewarding. We are rehearsing, at the moment, for Theatre@UAFS’ production of William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. The play is a tragedy about the beginning of the decline of Rome, but we have put a modern twist on it, bringing it into modern times and putting a spotlight on the civil unrest in the Middle East. Come with me, if you will, behind the scenes and I will show you how theatre magic is made!

My good friend John Hall checking his notes from last rehearsal. Keeping personal notes and notes from the director help you make sure you are making the needed adjustments to your performance each night. Doing this well is required to make the show the best it can be.

Brett Alexander, our props designer and props master is making sure that all of the props are in order. He has a special task in Julius Caesar since so many weapons are involved. Since all of these are stage weapons, practice weapons, or toys and have never been actual combat weapons, made from plastic rather than metal, they could be damaged or could even cause a trip hazard or some such safety issue, they are kept under his watchful eye and on the prop table until needed for a scene.

Zeke Sidwell adjusts his weapon and combat vest before going onstage for a scene. He is helped and supervised by the props master to make sure everything is a good fit.

Lee Hartsock reviews his lines before going onstage. As Brutus, he has one of the larger line loads, so he constantly double checks himself to make sure he is on text.

Lucilius, one of Brutus’ generals, played by Randal Marks is captured by Antony, played by Christian Meurer, and his forces.

Here we all wait to go on for the final big group scene. In the end, a cast is just one big, wacky, fun, dysfunctional family! Thanks for joining us for the night!
